Our Continued Involvement:

In appreciation of the support and acceptance we have been receiving in our home base (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and our home-away-from-home on Tinos, Greece and other islands in Greece, the ArtExchange has become increasingly involved with events that support the various communities.

We firmly believe that good art, good food and wine should be shared among good company!!

Recent and Ongoing Events:

"Symplokes/Interweavings"

Caterina Pizanias will curate the exhibit entitled "Symplokes/Interweavings", a collaboration of works by Greek Artist Lily Bakoyiannis and Shirley Rimer, of Red Deer, at the Red Deer and District Museum in the late summer of 2008.

Greek Cooking Classes in Calgary Greek Cooking Classes

The ArtExchange is proud to have contributed to the mini-revolution in raising awareness of regional foods and drinks in Calgary and surrounding area. Our Director’s Greek cooking classes are regularly sold out at the Cooking School of the CookBook Company where she shares recipes she has collected during travels to Greece and her passion for indigenous Greek grape wines.

The February “A Family Feast” class (February 24, 2006) is sold out.

Best Greek Wine vineyards
Mr. Evriviadis Sclavos, Owner, Sclavos Wines

The ArtExchange was present during the national wine exhibit "Oinoteleia" in Athens during the last week end of January 2006, where some of the best Greek wine producers presented their wines. An excellent event with wine tastings, food and wine pairings, opportunities to meet with the producers. And as is the case in all such events, we discovered a small producer ( 30.000 bottles a year) from the island of Cephallonia who’s been definitely touched by Dionysos!

The owner of Sclavos Wines, Mr. Evriviadis Sclavos (see photo above) tirelesly shared his philosophy and dificulties in organic farming—he follows Rudolph Steiner—as well as his commitment to work with indigenous grapes such as Moschato and Mavrodaphne. But we absolutely fell in love with his experimental "Metageitnion" white, made from local "Vostilidi" grapes…a most heavenly wine in its earthiness! The name of this wine is translated as "Between neighbors" and it hails back to the second month of the year in ancient Attica, approximately comparable to the last half of August and the first half of September. There was also a popular festival held at the time in honour of the god Apollo by the same name.
Definitely an occasion to celebrate any and all gods when savouring this most adventurous wine! It won’t be long before we pay him a visit on his island!

Greek Sculptor at work in Athens Project.
"Greek sculptors working al fresco"
Summer 2004:
On a recent trip to Greece, Caterina Pizanias came upon a project involving eleven sculptors who had been working al fresco all summer creating statues in full view of the public. These statues will be installed across the Marathon Route, just like in ancient Olympia and then after the Olympics they hope that financing will be made available to buy them individually, or that the mayor of Athens will create a sculpture park. It was magical just to watch them work....even with the tons of dust!

Painting by Phil Darrah

"Re-collections: Selected Works of Edmonton Artist, Phil Darrah"
Summer 2002:

The collaboration of The ArtExchange and The Exhibition House results in an extremely successful exhibition of Phil Darrah's work in Tinos, Greece. With a great turn out opening night, the majority of Darrah's work sold, and more exhibits lined up in the near future, this is definitely an artful success!

The ArtExchange is also actively supporting The Slow Food Movement in Calgary.

Slow Food"Slow Food is dedicated to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture and community; to the invigoration and proliferation of regional, seasonal culinary traditions, and to living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life."

The movement (the antithesis of "fast food") has its roots in Italy and promotes support of local producers, locally produced foods, and the restaurants and other eating establishments that use and serve their products. The ArtExchange is committed to the same philosophy in our choices of eating and/or drinking establishments during our tours of Greece.
