"Symplokes/Interweavings"
Red Deer and District Museum, Late summer of 2008
Identities by Lily Bakoyiannis

Casa Del MarLily Bakoyiannis is a long time collaborator with The ArtExchange as ceramics instructor and a lover of Alberta, its art and artists. In the 90s she took part in a three way exchange between ceramists from Greece and Canada and has known, worked and collaborated with Shirley Rimer, a well known ceramist from the Red Deer area.

Caterina Pizanias will curate the exhibit entitled "Symplokes/Interweavings" at the Red Deer and District Museum in the late summer of 2008. Symplokés, part myth, part narratives of crossing and settling, part the stitching together of these myths and narratives, will provide “openings” for new articulations about the meaning of dwelling, identities, and affiliations.

Lily Bakoyiannis and Shirley Rimer will engage in creative and critical conversations with these difficult issues. The artists will deploy aspects of the myth of Demeter—symbolic of the Earth Mother, goddess of grains, fruitfulness, agriculture and civil laws—in a contemporary context, exploring in the process issues of artists’ positioning between the poles of local and global, rural and urban, agricultural and industrial.
