The Manousakis Winery in Vatolakos, a tiny village not far from Chania, is the place where some of Crete’s best wines are handcrafted. The resident oenologist, Kostis Galanis, along with his small but expert team have been producing excellent wines from Rhone varietals such as Grenache, Roussanne, Syrah and Mourvedre.*** During our last visit we fell in love with their Pink—the most refreshing combination of Syrah (45%) and Grenache (55%): it is a bright pink, flavorful, playful….and easily addictive, especially when the temperatures rise in the southern Mediterranean! Every year Kostis Galanis takes a handful of students inside his tiny winery and introduces them to the science and magic of wine making—it is a sight to behold, engineering students totally engrossed in every detail! Outside the winery, Alexandra Manousakis is awaiting each group, tulip glasses in hand, and offers them a taste of the wines they learned about. Past Alexandra, George and Evangeline are setting the tables under the thousand-year-old olive tree where the real feast will take place: roasted lamb or pig, Chaniot pies, local cheese, fresh breads, olives…and in the end a birthday cake—we always have one or three of those during the month of May—baked and delivered in person by Maria Fotiadis, no one bakes better than Maria!. It is a feast to make any Greek God proud!! Some photos that can never tell the whole story…. |
