Throughout Greek history and civilization, the Aegean Sea has played a pivotal role. It has been at the crossroads of the traffic of peoples, ideas and customs; it is really the cauldron within which all elements became resolutely "Greek".
During the last 300 years, the Aegean islands have experienced an unprecedented revival of decorative arts. These have been fuelled by the stories, objects and new customs brought by the new merchant classes. Some islands prospered more than others yet despite socio-economic differences one finds some aesthetic constants: a painterly view of the world, and a predilection to over-decorate.
The Sporades islands (literally the "scattered ones") have been at the cultural crossroads of the Aegean. They provide the backdrop for our historical and artistic explorations during this journey: the folk/decorative arts of the Sporades.
We will start in Athens, where we will visit some of the most fascinating, whimsical collections of Greek Folk Art. We'll look at the elaborate costumes for the women, the lore and superstitions behind choices of motifs, colours and approaches to expression.
Then we will travel by land and sea to the island of Skyros, whose inhabitants have best contributed to the art of "self presentation". There we'll look at embroideries, ceramics, bronze and wood carved works which were used to dress body and abode alike.
During our five days in the studio we will re-create or create our own take of what we have learned/seen/discussed- or simply strike out according to our own muse.
Then, we will return to Athens for a couple of final days to re-visit favourite sites, do some shopping and try out some of Attica’s finest private wines!
Check out time.
