"Greece...an artful escape"
( A spring holiday on the Aegean!)
April 14 to 29, 2005

Printmaking JourneySpring 2005:
Painting Journey

This journey in creative painting/sketching/photographing is for beginners to advanced artists who love to travel and experience the pleasures of creating on site. It will spark your creativity, loosen your reserves in a convivial atmosphere—on location at some of the Aegean’s most spectacular sites. It will be a feast of all the senses. A most visually explosive escape!! You’ll be coddled in small family-run hotels, sample traditional food in restaurants and tavernas that are “off-limits” to the touring masses.

Acropolis

   (days 1-3)

We’ll start in Athens…the heart of Greece! We’ll sketch the Acropolis—the place that has defined Greece for millennia—and the surrounding neighborhoods that have been inhabited continually for thousands of years. And we will visit The National Gallery and The Museum of Contemporary Art to begin absorbing the layers of Greece’s history and culture.

   (days 4-6)

From our base in Athens, we will visit two jewels of the Saronic islands – Aegina and Hydra. The famed Temple of Aphaia on Aegina, one of the best preserved temples of Greece, begs to be painted! Hydra, a small barren island with the most picturesque of harbours, experienced a history of prosperity—thus its well preserved archontica (mansions) of unique Mediterranean beauty. A favourite of artists, foreign dignitaries – and a popular backdrop for many movies filmed in Greece. But the evenings will be ours…in the bustling “bohemian” atmosphere of Plaka where we will sample taverna food and wine from the barrel.

  (days 7-12)

Next, we will travel by ferry to Tinos, a most ruggedly beautiful Cycladic island and the birthplace of the founding fathers of modern Greek painting and sculpture. There, from our centrally located hotel, we'll walk its port city, visit its many musea, and take sketching and painting day trips to its spectacularly appointed villages of Pyrgos, Kalloni, Volax, Steni and Falatathos.

Taste some of Attica's finest private wines at a special wine tasting
Taste some fo Attica's finest private wines!
From Tinos we’ll take day sketching trips to the neighbouring islands of Mykonos, Syros and Andros, each with its own charm and history: who won’t want to dazzle their friends with paintings of Mykonos’ world famous harbour? Or, draw Syros’ neo-classical mansions, visit Andros’ world class Museum of Modern Art, or spend time painting The Hermes of Andros sculpture at its Archeological Museum?

  (days 13-14)

Then we will return to Athens where we will re-visit favourite sites, do some shopping and taste some of Attica’s finest private wines at a special wine tasting!

  (Day 15)

On our last day we will check out of our hotel and return to our home destinations...to savour memories and friendships.
