"Trekking Crete—Greece’s Most Beautiful Island"
May 2007

Crete is Greece’s largest and most varied and beautiful island—after all, it is the birthplace of Zeus and noted author Kazantzakis. It has tall mountains, valleys full of olive trees, vineyards, fruit orchards and many deep gorges strewn with unique flora and fauna, from the famed Kri-Kri, Crete’s wild goats, to condors, eagles, and many more birds—a veritable paradise for birdwatchers!

Our base will be the city of Chania, continually inhabited since prehistoric times. From there we will trek less-travelled gorges like the one of Saint Irene. Of course, we will also go down the most spectacular and famous Samaria Gorge, keeping an eye out for the elusive Kri-Kri, resting by meandering creeks, and photographing the beautiful spring flowers.

At the end of our Samaria Gorge trek, by the Libyan Sea, we’ll take a well deserved swim and lunch at Saint Roumeli, a seaside village. On other treks we will walk by the sea, visit ancient caves and medieval monasteries. Since no journey to Crete would be complete without a visit to the Minoan antiquities of Knossos and Phaestos, we will do that too. If you and your friends are active persons, enjoy trekking and adventure, this is your journey!
